AutoBild non si è limitata a scegliere una manciata di pneumatici da testare. Hanno iniziato con in totale 52 modelli, tutti nella dimensione 225/40 R18. Ma c'era un'imprevisto: questi pneumatici dovevano prima "qualificarsi" dimostrando solidi risultati nel frenare sia su strade bagnate che asciutte. Solo 20 hanno superato la selezione finale, più uno pneumatico incluso come "scenario peggiore" per dimostrare che la qualificazione alla frenata ha senso. Se uno pneumatico fallisce gravemente nei test di frenata fondamentali su bagnato/asciutto, probabilmente non brillerà magicamente in aree più sfumate come la manovrabilità o l'aquaplaning.
